Recap: Recess Lounge’s Soft-Opening Party
By DC Fab • November 29th, 2009
It’s the first of many soft-openings for Recess Lounge (727 15th Street NW), the newest addition to the White House socialite corridor that houses such great establishments such as The W Hotel, which is only blocks away.
Last Friday, Sayo and Brandon finally rang the bell for Recess allowing only a selected few to experience their newly renovated space, providing the perfect lounge for those looking to try something new.
DJ Jahsonic provided the perfect soundtrack to crack open the new spot. While he’s not the deejay to play “Drop and Gimme 50″, he played some hip-hop and soul classics that I haven’t heard in a while. (Read this great interview between Jahsonic and my girl Jade over at DC This Week). I really enjoyed his sets.
For those looking to discover this new lounge for yourself think cozy (it has lots of warm colors and lighting that makes the spot feel more comfortable); think intimate (it’s a rather small space so if you like mega-clubs just don’t come here); think clean (the great thing about renovated spaces is that everything is new so the bathrooms are clean!) and think different (well, because it is).
Catering to all types of people and music, I hear the ‘urban’ night (ugh, I really hate using that term but y’all know what I mean) will be Sunday nights. It will be interesting to see how this space creates a name for itself.

Damn Sayo is making it a Sunday night spot. I’m just really frustrated to live in Chocolate City yet the options for Friday/Saturday night clubbing are limited.

I agree…it’s actually lacking more so for the black crowd in DC on Fridays and Saturdays. Is Jahsonic the resident DJ for Saturdays? I think that would be a good look for the downtown nightlife scene. I know he’s at Fly on Wednesdays, too. He’s had Monday’s at Marvin crackin’ for a good minute and many of the patrons who come out regularly also hang out downtown. I think K St and all points south are ready for a more eclectic sound.

First off I want to say I LOVE DJ Jahsonic. I would follow him anywhere. I really love him when he’s at Marvin’s on Monday playing house and R&B classics…but I digress. So I got to see Recess Friday 11/27. I got to talk to the contractor that did the work and he was very proud, telling me he did the tile and the hardwood floor and the lights. His enthusiasm was infectious. The place is cozy, so cozy that when it got crowded people were forced to dance…which I like! The drinks are hella high! I ordered a Johnny Walker Black on the rocks and paid 12 bucks. I think I would pay the same price at The W, so I guess it’s the norm. As long as I can get in with no cover, I will go back. Next time I wanna go when they are playing old school hip hop and R&B all night. Overall the crowd was beautiful and was there to party party party!

I stopped by the lounge for the 2nd time last night, Jan. 30th and I had a great time! Even though the place wasn’t filled to its capacity it was still great times. The music and overall vibe was fun. In the DC area, I for myself have found it difficult to find a “soulful” place where the people simply come to enjoy themselves…dance, drink, laugh, small talk, etc. I would love to see more venues like this where the overall focus is having a Good Time!
