[First Look Inside] Recess Lounge DC
By DC Fab • November 24th, 2009
Well, here’s your first peek inside of Recess Lounge, the new local hotspot brought to you by local promoter Fisayo, best known for his parties at Mai Thai and Penang under the moniker “Sayo & Scottie”.
This time he’s teamed up with old college buddy Brandon Howard and they are days away from opening a spot to call their own, Recess Lounge.
No word on when the grand opening party will be…but only “influencers and tastemakers” allowed. The lounge will also feature a number of specialty cocktails from “Blackberry Fizz” (think vodka/prosecco/sweet basil) to “Peachy Pisco Sour” (think Gran Sierpe/honey-sweetened-peaches).
They’ll initially open five nights a week from Wednesday through Sunday, with Sunday night dedicated to that slow R&B groove, but will eventually have a full week line-up.

I had hopes for this place, but it looks cookie cutter so far.

Me as well “High Hopes”! I hope it lives up to the buzz Sayo created for it.

The “lounge” scene is as played out as the auto-tuner!

Hmm… Judging from the other comments it looks like hate is still the new love in the DMV? I guess some things never change. Looking forward to checking the spot out.

Congrats Sayo! I’m sure the spot will be a nice place to step out for an evening…looking forward to checking it out!

Breeze – no hate here, I hope Sayo makes a billion dollars with it…my point is there are too many ‘lounges’ in DC and not enough places to actually party. That’s my opinion. Am I supposed to bow down and worship this new ‘lounge’ when there are already too many of them as it is? K St LOUNGE, Lux LOUNGE, Layla LOUNGE, Lotus LOUNGE, Stir LOUNGE, LOUNGE 201, not to mention Lima, Eyebar, shall I continue? To me that means boring…everyone standing around posing and fronting, and of course nowhere to sit unless you can afford an extra house payment to get a table.
I’m just saying, be a true tastemaker & break the mold. Is there something about this spot that’s breaking the mold in any way? Serious question.

First off I want to say I LOVE DJ Jahsonic. I would follow him anywhere. I really love him when he’s at Marvin’s on Monday playing house and R&B classics…but I digress. So I got to see Recess last night. I got to talk to the contractor that did the work and he was very proud, telling me he did the tile and the hardwood floor and the lights. His enthusiasm was infectious. The place is cozy, so cozy that when it got crowded people were forced to dance…which I like! The drinks are hella high! I ordered a Johnny Walker Black on the rocks and paid 12 bucks. I think I would pay the same price at The W, so I guess it’s the norm. As long as I can get in with no cover, I will go back. Next time I wanna go when they are playing old school hip hop and R&B all night. Overall the crowd was beautiful and was there to party party party!

sigh – i’ve been to recess twice since my 1st post and brandon, sayo or anyone else @ recess can correct me if i’m wrong but the focus is on bringing good music and a cool new party to the scene…as opposed to the same ole same ole stuffy lounge deal. seems like a good idea. time will tell. the space is small but well done with some really nice touches for those rhat dig the little details and so far people have really enjoyed the soft launch parties.
i’m just sayin let’s give brothas a chance to open before we start talkin shit.

spot is hot…we will definitely be bringing our business there. I went there for the official grand opening on the 16th – lots of beautiful people and not to mention successful. everyone was friendly and the event planners were on point. It was tasteful and well-done. I had been to the lounge openings for K Street, Lima, Layla, 201 etc and this was a first of its kind. I felt more like I was at the opening of something special vs. a lounge/club – congrats to the owners and event team.
