Recap: Fabolous Album Release Party at Lux Lounge
By DC Fab • July 27th, 2009
Was it because Fabolous also known as “Lo So” was going to be in the building or perhaps the promoters were just doing their job but around 10:30 p.m., the line was around the corner at Lux Lounge. Previously known as The Avenue, Lux Lounge is on busy New York Avenue that brings many people from Maryland into the District.
Last Friday was a busy one and the perfect weather for a good night at the club. I’ll admit, the last place I want to be is a large club…something about it turns me off (perhaps spending too many Sundays in Hammerjacks as a teenager) but I love “Lo So” and hadn’t been to Lux in a minute.
With wood paneling reminiscent of so many other hot spots in the city (See: Love Nightclub, The Park at Fourteenth), Lux Lounge has come a long way since the concrete floors and sweaty walls of The Avenue.
With a more upscale feel, Lux Lounge popped on all three levels. Lead promoter at Lux Lounge, Taz Wube bragged on Twitter that Method Man, Redman, Ghostface, Clinton Portis and Vernon Davis would be in the building. Still, I definitely didn’t see all of those people (although I didn’t stay the entire evening so perhaps they did come through.) I did however see Vernon Davis, the DMV grown football player turned party guy in the off season.
Lux Lounge, which isn’t a lounge at all, reminds me of a grown-up Love. Although, since it is what I consider a mega-club, they still have to suffer through what I like to call “cattle-call syndrome,” where the most random people you think shouldn’t be in the club, end up partying right next to you. Still, there were some good looking men and women in the club.
I got comfortable on the second floor where DJ Harry Hotter was playing all of my favorite songs. He must have been playing everybody else’s favorite song too because every five minutes someone accidentally spilled their drink on my shoe, leg or dress (Note: Problem #2 with going to a mega-club). Still, I had a good time dancing…
Recently, many of you have been complaining that D.C. doesn’t dance anymore because everyone’s standing around trying to look cute. And while there were some posing being done, most people at Lux wanted to cut up and have a good time. I found myself shaking off my stuck-upism to dance.
Certain bars and bartenders were deathly slow. Still, it wasn’t like there was a shortage of bars where you could go to re-fill your cup.
I had a good time at Lux and would definitely do it again…well…if I was in the mood. Oh yea, here are more pics:

I went there last Saturday and I wasn’t impressed. The guestlist to get in free ends at 10pm. I got there a little past 9pm, assuming that must open an hour before right? Wrong. It was pouring rain so our group was able to get in, but not without MAJOR attitude from the bouncers. They had the nerve to tell us we would have to go back outside once the tent is up to get searched. Umm…why can’t you search us inside? Besides we’ve already had plenty of time to hide whatever weapon we might have somewhere. What kind of ridiculousness is that? Telling a group of chicks to go back out in the rain???????? I couldn’t believe how simple these 2 bouncers were, think outside the box. Even with the tent up, it’s cold, rain drizzles in, our hair gets messed up, etc.
People didn’t start coming in until say 9:55pm, so you know they were holding the line, in the RAIN, so everyone would have to pay. Why would anyone want to come back here when they are treated like this?
Then it was freezing inside, colder than normal. When we got to the second floor, the floor was wet in a straight line pattern. I looked up at the ceiling, or rather lack of one, and saw that the pipes were all leaking! I had to spend the whole evening looking up making sure I didn’t stand under the dripping parts, which was the ENTIRE pipe. Maybe if they turned down the a/c this wouldn’t happen.
The DJ’s bass was way too loud! The floor was vibrating so much I thought it would collapse and on some songs so were my teeth. For awhile I was standing on the wall and happened to notice an interesting occurrence. The pillars all had a little shelf on them where people put their empty glasses down and the vibrations caused the glass to fall off the shelf. I watched this happen to 4 glasses! Broken glass and ice all over the floor. You would think instead of cleaning this up every 5 minutes, they’d put up a sign saying “don’t leave your glass here” or remove that shelf.
The bartenders on the 2nd floor cheat you. One bartender charged different prices for drinks than downstairs. The other bartender added tip to your bill.

I gave up on Lux Lounge guestlist crap AFTER my 2nd visit. U have to get there too DAYUM early to take advantage of that mess, just like any other spot I guess. As long as any of these spots are not trying to charge more than $20, I will give them a try. However, I wouldn’t say its a grown up LOVE. If that were the case, how come Ballers are up in there with t-shirts on? It reminds of LOVE, just smaller, waayyyy smaller. It reminds of Love is a reason why I go there. The main reason? It is right down from the metro. The parking around there is crazy!

Wow. While I didn’t have the same experience, I will say I was concerned when I was on the second floor because of the vibrations of the bass, which I could feel in my chest (that’s how loud it was( and the fact that I felt the floor moving, which I don’t like.
