Recap: R&B Live DC Featuring Keke Wyatt
By DC Fab • July 22nd, 2009
I’m almost ashamed to admit that yesterday was my first time attending an R&B Live event (but shoot, I’m still recuperating from the weekend on Tuesdays but that’s enough excuses…) so I was really excited when I heard R&B singer Keke Wyatt would be headlining this month’s R&B Live.
When I arrived around 8:30 p.m., Station 9 was already packed with folks looking fabulous. I spotted my friend from Baltimore who said, “I forgot this was D.C. and people dress up here…” and yes we do!
If you ever go to an R&B Live, I suggest making a reservation. Those who didn’t make a reservation were left to deal with ’standing room only’. Thankfully, if a party came late, the hostess was more than happy with escorting you to their table. We made a late reservation and got a perfect spot to zone out to some great music and the sounds of the legendary DJ Kool.
Too bad I didn’t know the show wouldn’t start until 9:30 p.m., which left a lot of time for mingling with D.C.’s influential. Most of the socialites, promoters and venue mangers were there along with those who simply came for the music. Talk about R&B Live was all over U Street. I ate dinner at Alero before I came to the event and even the waitress was hoping she could get off early enough to hear Keke.
Well the waitress would have no problem doing that because the show started terribly late.
I was happy when the stunning N’Dambi took the stage with such a wonderful presence. With moves that reminded me of Tina Turner in her early days, N’Dambi’s soulful energy was evident. Formerly a background singer for Erykah Badu, N’Dambi’s alto voice, fun spirit and cute shoes made me forget that I had to get up early the next morning for work.
After about a 10 minute intermission led by DJ Kool who played the old school favorites, a stunning Keke Wyatt took the stage.
The first thing that came to mind was, “Wow! She’s skinny…and gorgeous.” I’ve been a fan of Keke since before that stabbing incident. Still, with an impressive range and stunning looks Keke sang her hit singles “My First Love” and my favorite cover she did of Patti Labelle’s “If Only You Knew”.
I’m not sure if the crowd had been sick of waiting or if that’s the natural vibe of R&B Live (although I’m sure it was a little bit of both) but the crowd wasn’t giving the excitement that Keke demanded wanted. At one point she stopped singing and said, “Are y’all sleep! Wake Up!…I’m not used to this <stank face>.” I’m sure she turned some people off by her outburst but surprise guest Jaguar Wright hopped on stage during a mini jam session to help pep the crowd and that seemed to work. With the two powerhouse voices competing with the band, I thought the show was picking up.
But Keke didn’t. She chucked deuces…literally… and left the stage abruptly. I was disappointed by her exit and still impressed by her voice. I hope I can catch her again when she comes to the District.
