Enough is Enough. I’m Sick of the D.C. Metro!
By DC Fab • June 30th, 2009
First the tragic collision that has left nine DMVers dead and over 70 injured on the Red line, followed by a rush-hour jumper who was struck and killed on the Red line…immediately followed by a man in a wheelchair who “rolled off of the track” earlier today. I’m sorry WMATA, but enough is enough.
Many people are looking for someone to blame: the city, an agency, the government?
Point your fingers if you must but I’m sick of the accidents, especially the preventable ones (I’m sure someone knew those trains were old), I’m sick of the delays (How reliable is your train tracking system, honestly! Isn’t the system 33 years old?! Older than me! You’ve got to be kidding.) and I’m especially sick of the elevator outages that have been out for over a year…y’all know y’all ain’t right.
For a system that millions of DMVers use every day to go in and out of D.C. and the surrounding areas, I think we deserve better…more!
I ride the MARC train (don’t even get me started on that mess) and the metro daily and I’m looking for y’all to step up. If they can’t step up by themselves, Mayor Fenty, let’s earmark some funds to the renovation of our public transit system. Don’t be afraid to call on Governor O’Malley and Governor Kaine. I’m sure y’all are sick of it too, having to answer to constituents who have to deal with a failed public transit system.
If I hear about one more Metro accident I think I’ll want to throw myself in front of a train (<— total and complete joke for emphasis).

I completely agree! It took 45 minutes yesterday to get from farragut north to fort totten! i think of the tracking system like meterology, you can be completely wrong, make things up and still have a job.

Amen. Money TALKS. I am sick of the men who won’t give up their seats to pregnant women or anyone who needs a seat more than them.

Please, suburbanites….refrain from telling us actual DC folks what to do with our city and city services. Especially since you all sashay across the line and use our streets, public transportation, police/emergency services, etc without paying one red cent towards its upkeep (commuter tax, anyone?? *crickets*). If you don’t like the way things are run in the city, you’re more than welcome to party/work/socialize in your respective counties and cities in the “MV” part of that wretched term “DMV” (*more crickets*)
We know our Mayor is a bit touched in the head. We’ll remedy that in a couple of years. Just give us a chance.

This is getting utterly ridiculous. And WMATA totally can’t handle the tourist overload and the influx of new interns and DMV residents popping up. Seriously, why is it after I wait 10-15+ minutes for a train, the trains are filled to capacity. I don’t even see the trains that packed in NYC sometimes, and they have 10+ residents + 30 million people in and out the city everyday (tourists, etc.).
If DC, the nation’s capital, doesn’t even have a satisfactory mass transit system, then what does that say about our country? Seriously, how is it that Europe has more than surpassed us in this arena when they’re not the most capitalistic/power society in the world? How could this happen?

Oops. I meant 10+ million

I had to wait some 20 min. for a train this morning at Gallery Place which made me late for work. They brought in an empty train for us that didn’t stop at the end of the platform like it usually does. I’m sorry but you can’t have delays during rush hour at Gallery Place and Metro Center. Have a train that at least goes back and forth between those stations.
I’ve seen around town that they are rolling out new bus stops. What was wrong with the previous ones? On the news they are saying the new stops will tell you when your bus is coming. They have money for optional luxury items like that? Then why does the price go up every year when they cry they are strapped for cash?

The truth is yes Metro is failed, but WE failed metro. By not putting the pressure on the State Governments(VA and MD) to support the WMATA. By complaining about the rate hikes that are necessary just to keep the lights on, and the federal government who doesn’t provide enough support to the DC government who in turn can help fund the system. If I was the CEO/President of the WMATA I would have stopped the trains a long time ago. Then not started them until I got the full support from all parties that depend on the system to run their constituents to and from work.

thank you for posting this. my thoughts about metro were expressed in my facebook status yesterday, but i won’t post it here b/c it wasn’t G rated lol. yesterday it took 30 minutes to get from Silver Spring to Takoma. that is 1 f’in stop away. and then when we finally got to Takoma, we were off-loaded. not a good look during morning rush hour. In the past week, i’ve been an hour late to work twice, and anywhere between 15-30 minutes late on any given day. no matter how early you leave the house, it never fails. i could probably sleep at the metro station and i’d still be late for work. i understand that they’re trying to be extra cautious and they’re still investigating the crash and what not, but metro needs to step their game up. do better metro, do better.
